In the spring of 2023, 1% for Open Space gave $3894 to the Colorado Chapter of Backcountry Hunters and Anglers for a fence removal project in and around Gunnison, CO. This stewardship project took place on May 20th, 2023 as part of a major celebration of Colorado Public Lands Day that took place at the I Bar Ranch. Over 120 volunteers dispersed to five different locations in the lower Gunnison Valley including Signal Peak, Hartman Rocks and a State Wildlife Area west of town to remove over 5 miles of fence. This effort was a huge success, opening up and uninhibiting major wildlife migration corridors and habitat. Fence removal efforts have been a priority for the Bureau of Land Management and the Forest Service. 1% for Open Space was thrilled to help with this stewardship effort to undivide open spaces and habitat making more suitable environments for all types of wildlife including the Gunnison Sage Grouse. Overall, this volunteer effort psoitively impacted 365 acres of land in the lower Gunnison Valley.
