Long Lake

Long Lake

In the spring of 2019, 1% for Open Space granted the Crested Butte Land Trust a total of $100,000 over six months for the purchase of 120 acres adjacent to and encompassing Long Lake. Long Lake is a favorite swimming hole and recreational site for all of the Gunnison Valley. The Lake is located above Meridian Lake Park, 1.5 miles up the Washington Gulch drainage. The 120 acres was previously owned and managed by the Forest Service but because of its location surrounded by private property the Forest Service wanted to put the property on their disposal list.

1% for Open Space saw a lot of conservation value in helping conserve this iconic lake. Not only does it preserve recreational access in the form of swimming, fishing, hiking and boating, but it also helps take some of the pressure off the Allen Family Ranch which lies adjacent to this 120 acre parcel. The Land Trust, in acquiring this piece of land will allow the Allen’s access to the water for grazing cattle and keep the public out of this area. They also will improve the infrastructure, parking signage and paths around the Lake allowing for long term sustainability of the area. 1% for Open Space was thrilled to be a part of this project along with the Town of Crested Butte, the Gunnison Valley Land Preservation Fund, The Gunnison Valley Housing Authority and many other public and private donors.
