Maxfield Meadows

Maxfield Meadows

In 2004, 1% for Open Space granted the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory $30,000 for the purchase of 44 acres of meadow previously owned by Orlando Maxfield. What is now referred to as Maxfield Meadows is located just south of the townsite of Gothic to the west side of Gothic Road nestled right underneath the iconic peak of Gothic Mountain. The purpose of this purchase by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) was to prevent development and also for the use of research sites.

1% for Open Space was happy to help RMBL in this effort. After the purchase of these 44 acres occurred, a conservation easement, held by the Crested Butte Land Trust, was placed on the property allowing for scientific use only. While the public cannot access the land it provides and uninterrupted viewshed of a stunning meadow filled with wildflowers in the summer season beneath the ridgeline of Gothic Mountain. The area also supplies wildlife habitat and a span of land that is not impeded on by public for research purposes.
