From 1999 to 2011, 1% for Open Space has helped the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory, the Trust for Public Land and the Crested Butte Land Trust preserve over 78 acres in Schofield Park with a total gift of $127,423. The 78 acres 1% helped fund add to the already protected 200 acres in Schofield Park and play a role in the 1,800 protected acres of the High Elk Corridor.
This area is of great importance because of its location next to National Forest and also because of its location next to and comprised of study sites for the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory. RMBL’s mission is to advance the deep scientific understanding of nature that promotes informed stewardship of the Earth. Their long-term studies of in-depth research, in combination with a relatively pristine location and a compressed growing season especially sensitive to variation in climate, provide amazing opportunities for to gain knowledge that could lead to global insights in this field of science.
With RMBL matching 1% for Open Space’s grant the two organizations preserved a total of 4.09 acres in Schofield Park. With the Crested Butte Land Trust and the Trust for Public land 1% for Open Space helped preserve a 74 acre parcel just north in Schofield Park from the RMBL parcels. This larger transaction occurred in 1999.
