In 2000, 1% for Open Space granted $1,250 to the Gunnison Ranchland Conservation Legacy for the purchase of a conservation easement on 160 acres of the 346 acres comprising the Tomichi Creek Ranch. The Tomichi Creek Ranch is located just 20 minutes east of Gunnison right off of Highway 50. The ranch lies as the base of the Tomichi Dome and near Tomichi Creek.
1% for Open Space was happy to be a part of this conservation effort even though the property itself lies outside of the Gunnison Valley proper. The ranchland is almost entirely wide open irrigated meadows that provide a productive hay growing environment and are perfect for grazing cattle. The open space provides the general public with uninterrupted views of the iconic Tomichi Dome while driving along Highway 50. And because the ranch borders huge swaths of BLM land, placing a conservation easement on the property preserves the open space and wildlife habitat and protects a wildlife corridor into perpetuity.
