Woods Walk

Woods Walk

In 2000 and 2001, 1% for Open Space granted the Crested Butte Land Trust a total of $58,000 for the purchase of 83 acres of two different Trappers Crossing Lots. These lots are just north of the town of Crested Butte to the west side of Peanut Lake Road, on the flanks of Mt. Emmons. Many of these lots encompass the corridor to access the Lower Loop and contain a very popular trail called the Woods Walk. The Woods Walk is a previously established trail, that was threatened by the development of these lots.

1% for Open Space felt strongly in support the Crested Butte Land Trust in this effort to purchase these lots because in doing so they were preserving public access to the Woods Walk in perpetuity. The lots purchased with help from 1% for Open Space, the Town of Crested Butte and Great Outdoors Colorado could very easily have been developed or purchased, diminishing the public’s access to Woods Walk and to the Lower Loop. The Woods Walk is a popular single track trail, beginning right outside of Crested Butte in a forest of beautiful aspens. The trail then opens up to fields of wildflowers in the summer and spectacular views of Paradise Divide. The Woods Walk provides trail access to the Lower Loop keeping people off the road. This project aligned with our mission to protect recreational access and uninterrupted viewsheds.
