In 2004, 1% for Open Space granted funding to the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory to aid in the preservation of 10 acres of Avery Peak. Avery Peak is located up the East River Valley just past the townsite of Gothic. The 10 acres of land preserved are located on the southern slopes of Avery Mountain. This land was purchased by the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory (RMBL) for the use of scientific research. The mission of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory is to sustains our quality of life by accelerating discoveries about the ecosystems that replenish the world’s air, water, and food supply.
1% for Open Space felt strongly about supporting this effort because we know the work that RMBL is doing is both valuable and necessary. It helps us continue our mission by being at the forefront of science, helping us realize what will protect our ecosystem and watershed integrity and how we can maintain wildlife habitat and where the wildlife corridors exist. The research done by RMBL scientists is also pertinent because it takes place at 9,000 ft or above and is specific to the Gunnison Valley in that way.
