Mountain Manners

In the summer of 2017 and again in 2019, 1% for Open Space funded Mountain Manners, an educational stewardship program, to establish local land stewardship efforts in order to help mitigate the effects of increased tourism. In 2017 1% for Open Space gave Mountain Manners $15,000 as seed money for the program. In 2019 1% for Open Space granted Mountain Manners another $7,000 to get some new educational projects off the ground and revamp their much needed program. Sadly, at the turn of summer, Mountain Manners disbanded as there was enough financial support from other organization. 1% for Open Space asked for the return of their funding and received 70% of their grant back. 1% for Open Space hopes to see new hands take over this program because it is vital to maintaining our public lands.

The primary focus of the 2017 Mountain Manners grant was to support the Peak Protector program which sent trained volunteers out into the backcountry to educate recreationalists. The goal of Mountain Manners and Peak Protectors is to kindly inform recreationalists of good stewardship practices in order to change adverse behavior that is detrimental to our public lands. 1% for Open Space realized the need of increased stewardship in the upper valley on the lands we have previously helped protect.
